Abstract

The present paper studies the relationship between developments within the built environment and the land (sites) on which they are situated. The introductory remarks on general urban theory and on the concept of the built environment conclude that urban land, being socially produced and having a fixed location is inseparable from the buildings located on it, and specific problems arise as the buildings decay. A brief description of the Danish situation is given, including the land and property taxation system as well as the development of the built up areas in Copenhagen. Empirical evidence is presented in order to demonstrate that certain life cycles of the built environment exist. -English summary
