Abstract

Developmental ideas have had hard time developing in psychology because of latter's increasing dismissal of the notion of universality of knowledge as being the core of psychology as science. This dismissal is linked with the appropriation of developmental psychology's know-how by social institutions of varied socio-moral interests texture, usually under the label of making psychology valuable to the given society in some applied function. This is partly linked by the socio-political dominance of psychology “made in USA” in the discipline, and its willing acceptance by social institutions all over the world. For further development of developmental ideas in psychology, the science needs to carefully separate basic and applied issues, and prioritize abstract theoretical inquiry into generic forms of development. Developmental science is universalistic by linking biological and socio-cultural issues through generalized formal models of development.
