Future smart homes contain internet of thing objects, or simply smart objects that are able to act pseudo intelligently, communicate and be context aware. Building a portable management system for these smart objects is non-trivial. A technically promising candidate is the use of a common smartphone camera that further has the advantage of being familiar to the user. By pointing the camera at a smart object it is recognized and a popup menu for operating it is displayed. However, such a system raises important questions about how to implement it on a smartphone, with respect to processing power and network bandwidth. This work addresses these issues by performing experiments providing a proof of concept. The experiments are performed on smartphones running an application which implements the Oriented Brief (ORB) picture recognition algorithm.
It has been found that it is possible to implement a real time portable user interface for smart homes using a common smartphone camera and the ORB algorithm. Additionally, it has been found that the network bandwidth is at a level acceptable for most common home networks.
