Abstract
Since there are vast applications possible for bioactive compounds in the pharma, food, and chemical industry; the most efficient, economical, and environmentally viable extraction method needs to be applied to valorize biomass. Many new methods as well as conventional methods have been developed with high recovery of bioactive components from biomasses. However, the chosen method should be evaluated in an economic way with a comparison of other methods to be implementable on industrial scale as well. This review paper aims to determine the state of the art for extraction methods of value-added compounds from biomasses with the focus on critical parameters such as cost, yield, extraction time, and environmental friendliness of the process.

Funding Information:
This paper is published within the framework of the EU Horizon 2020 project AQUACOMBINE which is funded by the European Commission under the Grant Agreement number 862834. The Aquacombine Project aims to introduce biorefinery new and promising halophyte feedstock/residue and to demonstrate how halophytes turn into a profitable biorefinery. Halophytes provide benefits in terms of conservation of freshwater, generation of edible food, fodder, oil, and other valuable by-products. Halophyte biomasses have a great potential for value-added compounds such as protein, amino acids, alkaloids, fatty acids and lipids, flavonoids, phenolics, quinines, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, saponins, and coumarins [11, 12]. Therefore, this paper aims to give a comprehensive review of the various existing extraction methods from different types of biomasses to contribute AQUACOMBINE project because choosing an economic and eco-friendly extraction method for value-added compounds will be really important for the project’s aims to be implemented at commercial scale. Hence, this paper introduces conventional and unconventional extraction methods for value-added compounds from various biomasses in the literature. More specifically and in detail, this review represents and discusses unconventional methods with details on the working principle of methods, challenges and benefits, applications in industry, and effective parameters of the process. Besides this, a comparative evaluation of the unconventional techniques is also presented.
