Abstract

The amount of renewable energy sources (RES) in the energy production share is permanently increasing, turning them into a vital alternative energy source for the grid. Due to their volatile power production because of e.g. fluctuating wind or solar irradiance, it is one of the main challenges to integrate PV systems and other renewables into power systems (PS) without causing stability issues. Exploiting the flexibility of microgrids is one method for balancing energy production and demand, which has mostly been investigated for AC- but not DC microgrids. Therefore, this paper presents a novel approach to utilize the flexibility in a DC microgrid cluster. A fuzzy logic controller was used to control the battery storage systems of the microgrids to achieve flexibility without violating the consumers’ privacy or comfort. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
