Abstract

HealthHealth is often seen as the attractive opposite to diseaseDisease but what are the molecular mechanisms that underpin health and can we target these pathways to improve healthHealth? Model organisms have been instrumental in defining the molecular genetics of complex biological processes, including longevityLongevity, and now they are increasingly being used to investigate healthHealth. In this chapter, we review some of the insights that have been gained by studying healthHealth and healthspanHealthspan in the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Interestingly, several gene mutations and interventions have been shown to improve healthHealth in C. elegansC. elegans offering possibilities of translation to humans.
