Abstract
Inbreeding is the mating of related individuals. It leads to a reduced number of heterozygotes and ultimately to complete homozygosity. Inbreeding depression is often observed with inbreeding and can be defined as the decrease in mean value of a trait due to inbreeding. Domestic and natural populations of small population sizes often suffer from inbreeding depression in traits closely related to fitness. Inbreeding depression can be a severe threat for the long-term persistence of populations.
