N2 - Wireless radio-based communication technologies have drastically evolved over the past decades to deliver lower cost, higher efficiency, enhanced quality of experience and diversified smart services (e.g., ambient assisted living, smart grid, e-health). The future development of these technologies faces multi-fold challenges, which are determined by the complexity of the myriad of emerging user and usage scenarios, the scarcity of radio spectrum (licensed and unlicensed), and the quest for user-friendly, data-intensive and security-sensitive technology and applications. This paper outlines the challenges and trends around the integration and development of smart wireless and data technologies, also in relation to standardization. Further, this integration is studied for a specific e-Health scenario in terms of application and usage requirements, involved technologies and required enablers and standardization needs.
