Abstract
I had the great privilege to work with Anders Petersen on two major research projects during the last ten years of his life. From 2013 to 2016, we studied the impact of psychiatric diagnoses such as depression and ADHD on individuals and society in a project called Diagnostic Culture. And from 2017 for the next five years, we worked on a joint project called The Culture of Grief, which was originally conceived as an attempt to understand the ongoing pathologization of bereavement and the inclusion of psychiatric diagnoses of grief into the reigning clinical manuals. As I write these words, it becomes clear to me how much of a difference there is between understanding grief analytically and scientifically on the one hand, which was what we attempted to do together, and experiencing all of its existential aspects on the other hand, which I am now left to do alone without my colleague and friend.
