Resumé

In order to make use of the term Kairos in the design of
persuasive software a formalisation of Kairos is needed. In this article
it is argued that Bayesian nets offer a straightforward approach to this
formalisation. The attractive properties of the Bayesian formalisation
are: 1) The identification of Kairos is based on probabilities, 2) it is
adaptive i.e. it learns from experiences with the persuasive technology
in question, and 3) the identification of Kairos is a matter of probability
and the user can decide his or her own threshold for the identification of
Kairos.
It is suggested that the technology described will turn out to be useful
e.g. as a persuasive tool in the teaching of young people with an autism
diagnosis. This, however, has to be tested empirically. It is also important
to pay serious attention to the ethical problems in this regard.
