Kinesisk kapitalisme og vestlig kapitalisme: samme seng og samme drøm?

    Abstract

This essay attempts to offer a framework of understanding the true implications behind the rise of Chinese capitalism and China-West relations in the era of globalization. It analyses these implications from a variety of perspectives of history, international relations and development studies, etc. It posits that the development of Sino-western relations is and will be based on a dialectical process of waxing and waning because both sides cannot escape “false expectations”, i.e. Western expectations of China’s “rule-biding behavior” and a larger share of China’s market vis-à-vis China’s long dream of recovering the “middle kingdom” and its unwilling acceptance of the existing international order. Due to fact that the interactions between Chinese capitalism and the West are closely connected with the evolutions and transformations of the capitalist world system as well as with global resources and wealth accumulation, and their respective internal political struggles, China-West relations will continue to be in a state of flux and reflux going through a considerable period of struggle and adjustment.
