Abstract
In historical TV drama and film research, the relationship between the period of production and the period represented in fictitious form is often described in terms of mirroring – a sort of dialogue between periods takes place. The question is in which ways and to what ends? On the basis of eight historical TV drama productions 1995–2015, my aim is to analyse the character of this dialogue. The ideas of proximity, distance and nostalgia, seen through the prism of culture and national identity, are applied. Different genre combinations and specificity of style represent other important vehicles for the continued dialogue between past and present.
