Abstract
Related to the concept of “Bildung”, “Dannelse”, forming, was during the 19th century part of modernizing the Danish education system and making it useful for the “real life”. However, in the post-World War Two reform processes, “dannelse” was identified with useless knowledge; as opposite to the “real life” orientation that was to direct school. The notion of “real life” was in both cases related to nationally oriented Protestantism. The article traces the influence of national Cultural Protestantism on notions of “real life” in relation to “dannelse”, focusing on the Cold War engineering of the Danish version of the Nordic welfare-state “school for all”.
