Abstract
This paper presents an approach for optimized hospital layout design based on metaheuristics. Through the use of metaheuristics the hospital functionalities are decomposed into geometric units. The units define the baseline for the design of the hospital, as the units are based on correlations of the functionalities within the units and across the units. For the study, presented in this paper, a model for hospital design is developed formulating the design requirements of the hospital functionalities as correlations of the health facility. The requirements of the hospital define the constraints for layout design as correlations of the functionalities as well as sizes. The main contribution of this study is an investigation of a soft computing method for optimization of the hospital layout design, where design requirements are met while the design quality in terms of design preferences is maximized for a hospital.
