Abstract
Recent research into the nexus between urban Mobilities and urban design has made it clear that there is a new field of research emerging. The emerging research field of ‘mobilities design’ draws upon a number of classic urban design discussions such as the design and materialisation of public spaces and streetscapes. Furthermore, it is argued that with the point of view in urban design thinking transit spaces, infrastructural landscapes, and places of mobilities often have underutilized potentials for becoming more interesting and better accommodating contemporary citizenship. The influence from urban design theory and practice towards Mobilities thinking is thus important. However, the reverse direction of influence (i.e. from Mobilities research to design) is equally important. By drawing on the now well established ‘mobilities turn’ as well as newer theories within materialities, actor-networks, assemblages, and non-human agencies the research field of Mobilities design offer new theoretical and conceptual insights to the design of mundane urban mobility. The chapter exemplifies this interaction between design and Mobilities through a few empirical touch points.
