Abstract

The increasing penetration of wind power poses new requirements for wind turbine in terms of ancillary services to support the grid. The model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed as an effective solution to control the neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter-based wind turbine. This paper presents a fault-ride through operation strategy for NPC converter-based high power wind turbine based on model predictive control strategy. Furthermore, the dynamic voltage support of MPC during voltage faults is investigated. Simulation results show that the proposed control system is able to perform superior dynamic response so as to optimize the voltage support contribution during grid faults. The negative-sequence reactive current injection during unbalanced faults can reduce the voltage unbalance during the fault and contribute to improve the power system stability.
