Leadership in times characterized by uncertainty and change is an ongoing endeavor to navigate sustained and irresolvable tensions and contradictions – leadership paradoxes. Successful leadership of paradox is the art of balancing opposing demands, and this book engages the reader in paradoxical thinking as a way of understanding leadership that matches the complexity and ambiguity of contemporary organizational life.
Based on research co-creation with managers and development professionals, this book outlines a practical pathway for managers, leaders and professionals for navigating paradox through 5 phases, exemplified through 10 leadership paradoxes, assisted by 15 tools, inspired by 20+ cases of real-life managers’ paradox navigation and guided by 25 navigational coordinates. Combining research and practice, this pathway facilitates the transfer of paradoxical thinking into paradoxical action in practice. Navigating Leadership Paradox has been written by an author collective of both researchers and practitioners reporting from a number of research and development initiatives on paradox, particularly a 1-year action-learning project involving 55 managers from 11 companies working with leadership paradoxes. All authors are involved in research and consultation on leadership and organizational paradox in private, public and civil society organizations as well as education in universities, corporate programs and other post-experience learner contexts.
