Abstract

In this opinion column, I discuss some problems that arise when participating in the public arena. These include irrational and confrontational reactions in the press and SOME which rarely address the issues in question in any serious way. Rather, they involve personal attacks on researchers, defamation or undermining of research, and are clearly based on (intentional or unintentional) misreading of the researcher’s work or comments in general. These angry responses (from influencers, public debaters, politicians, etc.) provide the basis for an onslaught of personal harassment and threats, as well as attacks on research, attempts to close university departments, remove funding, and get researchers fired.
One point is the tendency - in the interest of clickbait – to publicize and promote polarized and extreme positions, rather than genuine attempts to cover or understand the nuances and complexities of issues around inequality, discrimination, racism, sexism, and so forth. I argue that the media plays a negative role, when they normalize comparing/debating personal opinions, ideology or emotions are positioned with knowledge and research.
