Abstract

In this chapter, we present an overview of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) mass balance for wastewater
treatment plants (WWTPs) with a capacity of less than 2000 Population Equivalent (PE) and with a specific
focus on those serving tourist areas around the Baltic Sea Region. The primary goal is to provide a detailed
information on the quantities of N and P in the outlet of these treatment plants, shedding light on the
efficiency of wastewater treatment in this ecologically sensitive region.
Furthermore, we will identify technologies employed for the recovery and reuse of N and P. This involves
an examination of existing methods currently deployed in smaller WWTPs across the Baltic Sea Region,
alongside the identification and discussion of new technologies that have been tested in pilot-scale.
By giving insights from traditional practices and emerging innovations, this chapter aims to contribute to
a nuanced understanding of nutrient management in wastewater treatment within the Baltic Sea Region,
discussing possible optimization of resource utilization.
