Optical data storage in liquid-crystalline azobenzene side-chain polymers

    Abstract

    Liquid-crystalline polymeric substances such as azobenzene side-chain polymers were best suited for optical data storage applications owing to their unique optical properties. A mean-field theory for the storage process was investigated. The effect of inter-molecular forces and the birefringence gratings was evaluated.
