Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to demonstrate how physical inactivity can be studied not merely as a personal trouble but as a social issue that is closely related to the social context of physically inactive individuals. First, we present first-person narratives of physically inactive individuals in different phases of their adult lives (young, mid-age, late adulthood). Second, relying on recent publications, we provide a multi-faceted understanding of the social determinants of physical inactivity. In so doing, we highlight how social determinants operate and influence physical activity levels throughout adult life. We conclude that interventions into the underlying social and structural conditions are essential to support physical activity among adults, and we point to the challenges of integrating physical activity into people's lives beyond “simple” individual-level behaviour change.
