Abstract

Electric grid modernization urges the development of power systems with increasing penetration of power electronics interfaced resources (e.g., photovoltaics [PVs], wind turbines, batteries, etc.). To effectively manage distributed resources interfaced with power electronic inverters and energize local loads, especially at critical infrastructures, microgrids were proposed and have been significantly developed in the past years. Conventional microgrids feature distributed sources and loads and are operated as controllable entities to ensure local grid service and support external grid operation. Furthermore, multiple microgrids can be interconnected as networked microgrids to provide additional operational flexibility, and traditional static microgrids can be further adjusted to dynamic microgrids, which play a significant role in enhancing grid resiliency. This book chapter introduces the structure of modern electric grids with network-connected and inverter dominated microgrids, focusing on their effective and resilient control and operation.
