Abstract

This report presents the results of an experimental study of the wave energy converting abilities of the DEXA wave energy converter (WEC). DEXA is a WEC that uses its movement in matching the shape of an oncoming wave to generate power.

Model tests have been performed using a scale model, provided by DEXA Wave Energy ApS, in regular and irregular wave states, as described in Assessment of Wave Energy Devices. Best Practice as used in Denmark (Frigaard et al., 2008). The length scale of the model was 1:20 compared to a full scale device suitable fro the Danish part of the North Sea, according to DEXA Wave Energy ApS.

The tests were carried out at Dept. of Civil Engineering, Aalborg University (AAU) in the 3D deep water wave tank. The displacement and force applied to a power take off system, provided by DEXA Wave Energy ApS, were measured and used for calculation of power available to the power take-off.
