Abstract
The purpose of this article is to offer a review of relevant psychodynamic literature on weakenings and ruptures in the supervisory alliance and their handling in supervision. The article describes what characterizes the supervisory relationship in supervision of psychotherapy and how it can be conceptualized through the supervisory alliance. The contributions of the supervisor and supervisee to weakening’s and ruptures in the alliance are discussed via some dynamic relational themes i.e. (1) power, (2) regression, (3) transference and countertransference and (4) attachment, and the contributions of the patient, the supervision group, and the organizational settings are considered. Finally the handling of weakenings and ruptures in the supervisory alliance is discussed.
