Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a general outline of the role of business models in the process of firm internationalisation. It analyses how managers make sense of their decisions, actions, and role in the process of firm internationalisation. The book investigates the need for business model adaptation in firm internationalisation depending on target market, product, and distribution. It argues that host country differences may require business model changes due to the specific needs, structure, rules, and customer segment characteristics in the host market. The book describes the premise that platform business models (PBMs) are widely discussed by practitioners and are found crucially responsible for the outcomes of entering new foreign markets. It argues that firms intending to internationalise generally seek profitable business models ensuring endurance through changes they encounter in their business environment.
