Abstract

“Why didn’t they choose me?”, “Why am I no longer part of the team?”, “Why have I been put in this group?” Such questions are commonplace with youth athletes, as a consequence of the variety of selection processes in youth sport. The aim of this chapter is to conceptualise how selection does not only give rise to personal troubles, but selection is also enacted social-relationally and bound up in systems that structure youth sport. In the beginning of the chapter, I outline the various ways youth athletes are selected (or deselected) and explore how such types of selection are experienced by youth athletes. Next, I explore the role of adults (coaches and parents) in the selection of youth athletes as well as the systems in which they are embedded. Finally, I conclude that more attention should be paid to selection in youth sport as a social issue, focusing on how it is social-relationally enacted and systemically embedded.
