Simulation of municipal solid waste incineration in an industrial grate boiler coupled with an in-house bed model and analysis for the feedstock flexibility

Abstract

Grate-firing incineration, one of the most efficient and promising technologies to dispose municipal solid waste (MSW), has been widely applied in waste to energy (WtE) plants. Since it is difficult and costly to investigate the MSW incineration experimentally, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is particularly crucial for design and optimization of MSW incineration. In this paper, we simulate the MSW incineration in an industrial grate-firing boiler via Ansys Fluent coupled with an in-house bed model, by the radiation heat flux from the freeboard and the combustibles leaving the fuel bed. The simulation results are validated by the operation data at the different positions inside the boiler. After validation, the simulation study for a new MSW feedstock incineration has been carried out aiming for the mandatory garbage classification rules implementation in China recently. The optimization of the boiler operation conditions for the new feedstock is under way.
