Abstrakt

The transition towards a 100 % fossil-free energy system, while achieving extreme penetration levels of intermittent wind and solar power in electricity generation, requires demandside technologies that are smart (intermittency-friendly) and efficient.
The interaction between electric and thermal energy (heating and cooling) demands represent a potential area for increasing supply and demand flexibility that could come to contribute significantly to the integration of intermittent renewables.
We are proposing a smart innovative state-of-the-art heat pump concept with advanced thermal storage materials and the ability to generate electricity back to the grid. This new concept will not only improve the residential thermal supply system efficiency by 30-40 %, but will also extend the current intra-day flexibility of heat pumps to a wider range of flexible uses.
In this paper, we will investigate and compare the core technology options that are involved in the design of this concept, including high-pressure heat pumps, advanced thermal storage materials, and small-scale Rankine cycles with natural working fluids.
The new concept – called HP2Grid - effectively represents state-of-the-art in terms of how heat pumps may be designed and operated in SmartGrids. Our hypothesis is that this concept will be a cost-effective alternative to most electro-chemical and mechanical storage options.
