Abstract
Detailed and realistic models of a generator and its associated excitation system are needed to accurately study the loss of field (LOF) phenomenon, while the well-known dq generator model, available in the conventional simulation programs, has some limitations to fulfill this purpose. Clearly, only one type of LOF failures, mentioned in IEEE Standard C37.102-2006, can be modeled using the dq model. On the other hand, the phase domain (PD) generator model, available in the real-time-digital-simulator (RTDS) allows realistic modeling of different LOF failures. In this paper, a power generation unit, equipped with a typical and realistic excitation system, is developed by using the PD generator model in order to perform careful LOF studies, so that all kinds of complete and partial LOF failures can be modeled in accordance with IEEE Standard C37.102-2006. The obtained simulation results confirm that generator dynamics differ during such various failures and should be regarded to develop new LOF protection schemes.
