Abstract

Industry 4.0 is widely acknowledged in industry, and many companies have al-ready started their digital transformation journey. However, companies ap-proach the digital transformation differently, and research has demonstrated that companies have different strategies and approaches to digital transfor-mation. In the light of the different strategies and approaches, this research pa-per investigates how the strategic approach chosen by SME manufacturers is affected by their level of digital maturity. The study is based on a multiple case study of thirteen small- and medium sized Danish manufacturers. The pa-per draws the conclusion that there is a significant relation between the com-panies’ digital maturity level and their strategic approach. Three distinct pat-terns of the relationship between strategy and digital maturity are identified and discussed.
