Abstract

Background and Aim
Persistent pain is common among adolescents and can lead to high consumption of analgesics, school absenteeism, reduced participation in activities and future health problems. There is a lack of evidence about persistent pain in adolescents, reflected in scarce evidence on management, very few treatment guidelines and limited preventative measures for this age group. Adolescents express the need for age-appropriate interventions, provided by healthcare professionals, to help them manage their pain. Therefore, it is crucial to involve both adolescents experiencing pain and healthcare
professionals early in the development of interventions.

The aim of this project is to co-develop an intervention with users and stakeholders for adolescents with persistent pain, and to evaluate the intervention in a feasibility and pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) in senior high schools.

Method
The project consists of two phases:
1. Co-development of the intervention in collaboration with adolescents with persistent pain, a multidisciplinary team (school nurses, physiotherapists, general practitioners, psychologists and teachers), and with parents.
2. Feasibility testing and evaluation through a pilot RCT.

The project is currently ongoing in phase 1, where we have explored participants' thoughts and visions for an intervention through future workshops (step 1). In step 2, we will integrate relevant literature with results from step 1, followed by a 3rd step with new workshops where the visions from step 1 will be refined to design the intervention.

In phase 2, we will test the feasibility of the intervention by conducting a pilot RCT involving participants from four senior high schools in Norway. The project has a timeline of six years, running until 2029.

Expected Implications
This project will address the needs of adolescents, healthcare professionals, teachers, and parents in the development of an intervention for persistent pain. The project's results will enhance our understanding of how to support adolescents seeking help through school and/or healthcare services. The project will provide insights into how we can assist adolescents who have already embarked on an unfavorable health trajectory in achieving positive outcomes, potentially preventing pain from persisting into young adulthood.
