Abstract

This chapter aims to describe how transnational migration studies may supplement globalization theory in bringing attention to the ways in which people engage themselves in networks and activities across nation-state borders. To do so the chapter describes the origin of transnational migration theory and a number of key concepts. Further, the chapter points to the perspectives arising when using transnational migration theory to study sports labor migration, along with the option of conducting multi-sited studies across borders to break down methodological nationalism. Finally, the chapter discusses points of critique that have been raised against transnational migration theory and suggests additional perspectives that could further inspire the development of the field of research in sports and migration issues.
