Abstract

The international study of music therapy and autism "Trial of Music Therapy's Effectiveness for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders" (TIME-A) occurs since 2012 and is present in nine different countries. This research is an in-depth analysis of the use of improvisational music therapy for children with autism. In the United Kingdom and Brazil (two of the countries participating in the study) music therapy has been present for more than 50 years and improvisational music therapy has a very important role in practice and research in the field of autism. However, the United Kingdom and Brazil have differences in models and theoretical concepts on the use of improvisational music therapy. This workshop will present experiences of improvisational music therapy used in the TIME-A study according to the practices, models and theoretical concepts used in the two countries.
