Description

Forms of musicality in early mother-infant interaction – their contribution to our understanding of the emerging self. In: Lyra. M. A micro-genetic focus on dialogical self in early ontogeny: On objects, bodies and forms (symposium) The presentation addresses the emergence of a dialogical self by investigating dynamics of dialogue in early mother-infant interactions. It draws on a comparative design and investigates interactions of North German mothers from middle class families and Cameroonian farming Nso mothers with their 3-month old infants. The data corpus comprises a total of 40 video-recordings of free play interactions in the respective sites as well as the detailed transcription of these recordings. Previous studies on this data corpus identified distinct discursive genres that can be considered as interrelated with broader ideologies of good child care in the specific communities (e.g., Demuth, 2008). The present study focuses in more detail on musical genres and various forms of singing in these interactions. Analysis is based on procedures from discursive psychology. The findings revealed distinct patterns of musicality that vary in form and extend in the two groups. The findings will be discussed in light of the contribution to our understanding of the development of interpersonal relationships and the emerging self.
