Challenging energy narratives through design methods: an experience with professionals from the smart energy tech industry

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

Within the energy transition framework in the EU, policies and strategies seeking zero-carbon emissions by 2050 largely rely on consumers’ adoption of renewable energy systems and smart home technologies for energy management. Such goals seem challenging due to, e.g., the dissonances between technical visions and households’ energy practices. Addressing this issue, we have presented a novel design methodology grounded in interdisciplinary theories to investigate how a micro-level understanding of consumers’ energy practices may (i) challenge normative narratives, (ii) foster alternative and more inclusive scenarios for the energy sector, and (iii) open up ways to include consumers in the loop of the design of smart energy technologies.
