Experiments with Pure and Generative AI: Experiences and potential

Generative AI is omnipresent. The research and education sector is no exception. This also applies to the field of research information management and thus Pure. We believe there is a lot of potential for the use of generative AI in relation to Pure. We can see several areas in Pure where generative AI could be useful. For example, in terms of data cleansing, streamlining administrative data entry tasks, enriching metadata, and generating textual descriptions of research and researchers based on content in Pure.

As examples, we have experimented with:
- Normalizing unstructured data from Pure
- Generating keywords based on existing metadata
- Attaching structured keywords to content in Pure to meet local organizational needs
- Classifying external organizations by type
- Generating researcher profile description texts based on Pure data
- Creating impact stories based on Pure data

In our presentation, we will try to cover the potential we see for the application of generative AI in Pure, share our experiences from our experiments, and provide suggestions on how it could be integrated into one’s day-to-day work with Pure in the future. Generative AI can be used as a detached service, but there is also potential to integrate, for example, Pure's API and Chat GPT's API to extract data from Pure, transform it using generative AI and load it back in to Pure. Finally, there is also great future potential for native support of generative AI services from within Pure, to improve Fingerprint, find related content within Pure, clean up data, enrich descriptions, assist researchers in the Pure UX, help with funding processes, CV’s and much more. It should be emphasized that at the present time, we have not implemented any form of generative AI in our work with Pure, and that the presentation focuses on sharing experiences (good or bad) from our experiments and hopefully can be an inspiration for the Pure community and Elsevier regarding future development and utilization.
