On 30 September 2019, IRI THESys hosted 20 scholars within the framework of a workshop on Elinor Ostrom’s Social-Ecological-Systems (SES) Framework. The workshop was led by Insa Theesfeld and Achim Schlüter. IASC Workshop on Social-Ecological-Systems
The workshop started off with an introduction to the SES framework, its theoretical background and application in two different research contexts in Tajikistan and Costa Rica. The disciplinary diversity of the group conduced to challenging and thought-provoking discussions about the framework and its applicability to a wide array of empirical settings ranging from plant breeding, polders to environmental peace-building. Reflecting the contemporary challenges of our human-environment systems, the role of technology therein and its implications for the advancement of the framework were discussed prominently. Such opportunities as the according workshop that bring in distinct research perspectives will continue to serve as basis for advancing the SES Framework.
The workshop was jointly organised with the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC), in particular by the coordinator of the European chapter Insa Theesfeld, then long-standing member Achim Schlüter and the early career scholar representative Beril Ocaklı from IRI THESys.
