Indeterminate mobilities: Travelling with Uncertain Futures

Activity: Attending an eventOrganisation or participation in workshops, courses, seminars, exhibitions or similar

    Description

This PhD course is aimed at PhD students within areas such as urban studies, human and cultural geography, urban design, city planning, cultural studies, political science, sociology and anthropology. With theme “Indeterminate mobilities: travelling with uncertain futures” we want to consider the precarious and vulnerable futures of mobilities across scales from local neighbourhoods to global transport systems and mega regions. The uncertainties connected to the futures of mobilities requires an open mind set and agile theoretical concepts. In this PhD course we shall aim at bridging the sensitivity to ‘unknown futures’ with a theoretical anchoring within the ‘new mobilities turn’ in general and theories related to materialities, futures, and uncertainty in particular. The course will discuss the utopian visioning of future mobilities through scenarios, as well as through more ‘non-representational’ approaches such as literature and art. The course lecturers will present their own research and link this to the participant’s projects. A modest amount of reading prior to the course is to be expected as well as each participant is asked to be able shortly to present their research project in the light of the course theme and the selected readings
