Description
Invited plenary presentation at AI For the People Conference, 11 November 2021Design and use of predictive algorithms in the public sector require deep understanding of context, culture, values, decision-making and social contract (rights & duties). Controversies may erupt when government agencies implement AI-powered solutions that reduce or neglect practical problems and ‘lived experience’ of citizens and end-users, whether it is in the workplace, urban space, elderly care, educational system etc. In this presentation, I argue that Responsible AI needs intermediaries (1) who can translate technical jargon to decision-makers responsible for legislative change, (2) intermediaries who can translate social science to technical solutions, and (3) intermediaries who can speak to both scientists and policymakers, creating a common language to make democratic solutions.
