Description

Decision-making and climate change planning: Synergies, conflicts, and trade-offs

The primary focus of this Ph.D. project is upon urban planners at the municipal and regional levels in Denmark and the US who work with climate change mitigation and adaptation planning. This is a field of planning that is rapidly evolving, and is one that crosses many of the key planning sectors, such as land use, transport, health, social development, energy, natural systems and infrastructure planning. Many questions remain unanswered as to how competing social, environmental, and economic priorities should be established, who should pay for the measures and policies, how can fairness and equality be best achieved, and on what grounds can long-term planning measures (with time horizons in excess of 100 years) be traded off against more pressing short-term needs.
