Regional solutions for mitigating seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea - Interdisciplinary synthesis

Activity: Attending an eventOrganisation or participation in workshops, courses, seminars, exhibitions or similar

Description

The Baltic Sea is a sea basin under ecological stress and the seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic has expanded over the whole region becoming increasingly more difficult to solve. Solutions to mitigate the conflict have not been adequate and thereby the impact of seal on coastal capture fisheries and aquaculture has been distressing for the fisheries sector. Seal populations have been growing fast the last 35 years, and opportunities for directly managing the populations are limited. The core aim of the RESOCO-project is to build an interdisciplinary synthesis of up-to-date Nordic knowledge and best practices and establish a scientific base for solutions on how to effectively reconcile the conflict. The project is coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) and comprised of strong transdisciplinary expertise from Sweden (SLU and Lund University), Denmark (Aarhus University), Estonia (University Tartu) and Åland Island (Archipelago Pares).
