Description

Parallel to the strong urbanization and the erosion of farming communities the re-definition of rural areas as recreational spaces has orchestrated ontological pluralism and pawed the way for epistemological certainty. As a result of the concrete political negotiations and priorities existing path dependencies in the agro-industrial regimes are being challenged by new social and human agency leading to new institutions. In recent decades emerging examples of growing social movements (Kristensen 1997, Brandt 2003), with close relations to the counter culture, lead in 1987 to a Danish government decision that installed the first state regulated guidelines for organic farming. In these years the gastronomic elite in Denmark receives global recognition - NOMA elected best restaurant of the year by Guide Michelin in 2010, and Rasmus Kofoed wins the Bocuse D’Or 2011. Now the Danish government has decided to fund a Culinary Institute - called “MadX” (MadX - the Danish acronym for Food Experimentarium). What are the connection between such emerging social network driven initiatives and the new ambiguous state driven initiative for a Culinary Institute of Denmark, where quality and health are key words? What kind of mobilization characterizes this governmental initiative? To what extent is it possible to identify co-evolution processes between this top-down initiative and former human agency and social movements? These are the questions that this paper will discuss in the framework of the path creation and path dependency approach.
