Description
The main issue of this lecture is how to cross the gulf between no industry and embryonic industry in order for a new industry to emerge. A model of new industry creation and legitimation is put forward that theorizes the change from a condition in which an industry does not exist to a final condition in which it is institutionalized. This phenomenon - creation and legitimation of new industries - has received scant attention in academic research and has been misinterpreted and inefficiently practiced by policy makers and development organizations.
The lecture will proceed by exploring the identified above gap, grounding the discussion in a typology of legitimation. Then the emergent process model of new industry creation and legitimation is presented and discussed. A reflection on phenomenon under investigation and its impact on policy will conclude the lecture.
