University of Edinburgh

Activity: Visiting another research institution

Description

In my research visit at the University of Edinburgh, I started work on a paper with the preliminary title "Typological Variation in Emergent Languages" with the supervision of Edoardo Maria Ponti, a Lecturer of the university.

The paper aims to model the impact of various external factors – including language contact – on the variation in the grammatical structure of natural languages, investigating part of the reason behind extant linguistic diversity.

Its methodology involves using a multi-agent communication framework where artificial agents have to communicate about a game scenario. Natural languages are modelled by the emergent code these agents develop together in order to solve their target tasks.

While the research stay is over, the work is to be continued on the paper.
