Description

A protein scientist at Aalborg University in Denmark, Michael Toft Overgaard, and his team, including postdoctoral students Helene Halkjær Jensen and Malene Brohus, played a crucial role in the exoneration of Kathleen Folbigg, who was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her children. Mr Overgaard's team discovered the mechanism by which a mutation of the CALM2 gene, found in Ms Folbigg and her children, interferes with the channelling of calcium in the heart, causing severe arrhythmias. Their research was published in a paper entitled "Infanticide vs. inherited cardiac arrhythmias" in the journal of the European Society of Cardiology.
