Description

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) plans to launch an initiative that would allow smaller business ideas to receive funds, even though they traditionally would not due to a lack of support. Usually, the projects with the most support and votes will be chosen as the lucky receiver of funds, while the less popular projects will struggle. With the new initiative, NSF wants to introduce a "golden ticket", which would give the less favoured projects one veto to override the decisions of their peers. This is a good idea, as reviewers' biases are often "based on an applicant's gender, career stage, or institution, which could play into the final decision," according to Thomas Sinkjær, a medical researcher at Aalborg University.
