Imperialism's long shadow: the UK universities grappling with a colonial past

Press/Media: Press / Media

Description

There has been a hot debate in recent years on whether to judge the views of historical figures by the standards of their or our time. One such figure is the nineteenth-century naturalist Thomas Henry Huxley, who advocated that black people are inferior compared to white people. Some people wish to tear down statues of Huxley and buildings with his name on it, while others wish to let them remain as a historical reminder of what not to do. "The purpose of naming a building after someone is to honour that person," says Rahma Elmahdi, clinician and epidemiologist at Aalborg University.
