Description

Lars Arendt-Nielsen, pain researcher at Aalborg University, has contributed to a study on the sensitivity of the mouth to hot drinks, a phenomenon known as "cat's tongue". The study found that the oral cavity is particularly sensitive to heat due to the thinness of the mouth's mucosa, which does not protect against heat as effectively as skin. Mr Arendt-Nielsen compared the effect of the mucosa to skin without an epidermis. The study also found that consuming very hot drinks could potentially increase the risk of esophageal cancer.
