Description of impact

The JAMBO project – in which Aalborg University investigated fishing activities, seabed conditions, and fauna in Jammer Bay in the Skagerrak near Hanstholm – documented that beam trawling with heavy gear has a significantly harmful impact on the marine environment. These research findings have had direct political influence: the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Jacob Jensen (Liberal Party), has not only expressed a desire for a national beam trawl ban but will also bring the study to the EU in pursuit of a European-wide ban. The project has thus demonstrated clear “Political impact”. It can also be classified as having an “Other impact” – specifically an environmental impact – as its findings contribute to addressing the challenges facing both Denmark’s and the world’s marine ecosystems.
