Description of impact
In February, the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience published a study analyzing the diet of over 500 raccoon dogs, which received significant media attention and sparked debate, particularly among hunters. The study challenges the widespread perception of the raccoon dog as harmful to the ecosystem, as the results indicate that it preys on endangered species only to a limited extent. This undermines the previous rationale for population control and is therefore considered to have a "Cultural impact", as it influences how both hunters and the general public perceive the species. In addition, the study is considered to have an "Other impact" – specifically an environmental one – as the findings may affect the management of raccoon dogs and, consequently, nature conservation efforts.Category of impact | Cultural impact, Other impact |
